Moments that the director “doesn't understand” land in Costa's films after the millennium. He doesn't evoke the illusion of confident creative control, or controlled chaos or improvisation. In the least expected moments, humorous exaggeration, acronym, irony and tenderness penetrate the film. Caring hospital staff or government officials become imperfect parental authorities. Our “heroes” are threatened by the indifference of an orderly environment and the degradation of living beings with a rich landscape of memory into the roles of lost and lunatic.
