Rancid was formed in 1991 from the ruins of the short-lived but hugely influential Operation Ivy crew, who were one of the first on the West Coast to combine hardcore energy with ska. In the 1990s they were, alongside Green Day and the Offspring, the biggest names in American punk, inspiring a new wave of mainstream interest in such music. They have nine studio albums to their credit, the most recent of which is 2017's Trouble Maker; they have sold over four million records in total, achieving a commercial success that is rare for a punk band.
