About Heilung

Heilung is an experimental folk band with members from Denmark, Norway and Germany. It bases its work on the lyrics of original artifacts from the Iron Age and Viking Age. The band itself describes its music as “an amplified history of early medieval Northern Europe.”* In German, Heilung means “healing“.

The amplification of history and the ability to connect modern society to the foundations of humanity's origins through music – that's Heilung. Since their formation in 2015, this group has been creating enigmatic rituals linked to mystical sound.

In 2015, Heilung released their first full-length album, Ofnir. Their unconventional approach to making music, using everything from authentic, archaic and seemingly simple instruments to human bones and guttural chanting, creates captivating compositions that are far from primitive. Producer and founding member Christopher Juul incorporates subtle electronic elements that elevate the musical atmosphere and provide a deeper and more layered soundscape. Their songs are full of contrasts – harsh and aged to the point of animalistic screams, and melodic, powerful and haunting passages dominated by the voice of Maria Franz.

In 2017, they debuted their concert ritual on the stage of Castlefest, kicking off a long string of other concerts. They have now released three full-length albums. In their latest chapter so far, titled Drif, Heilung once again venture into the past, but unlike their previous efforts, which focused on prehistoric Northern Europe, the album focuses on other great foundational civilizations outside of Europe.
