Hot summer, lazy time, hip-hop freestyle, guys with tattoos and flirtatious girls you'd better not mess with. This is the place from his youth to which Tymek, a student at the Warsaw Academy of Music preparing to embark on a worldwide career as a pianist, returns. His mother is also here, as well as his brother Jacek and his friends from the old days. However, Tymek appears here only for a short while—after the holidays he leaves for Western Europe, where he has received a scholarship. This short visit is enough for him to get to know the central meeting point of the local youth, the newly opened döner place. The neighbourhood boys tolerate the foreigners who run it, but there are minor exceptions. Over time, the conflict escalates. The spiral of fear and danger begins to spiral up and Tymek finds himself at the centre of it.

Inspired by true events, this film by director Damian Kocur, who comes from a small Silesian town, is a film about small town life that is devoid of the heavy-handed didacticism typical of Polish cinema on the subject: natural (largely thanks to the casting of non-actors), but not naturalistic; non-judgmental, but not shying away from moral issues. Bread and Salt won a special prize at the Venice Film Festival and received rave critical reviews.
