Release 2023

August is the first production of the independent Belarusian expat theatre company BY theatre.

The date of the play's premiere is not coincidental - 25 March is Belarusian Independence Day. The creative collective performs as a group of anonymous artists for reasons of safety, not only their own, but in the first instance their loved ones who have remained in Belarus.

In the performance August, using the example of an ordinary Belarusian family, BY theatre looks at the events and protests that took place in 2020. It explores the collective trauma of Belarusian society, which needs to be realised and worked through in order to internally relive that endless August (for many people who stayed in the country, it still hasn't ended) and move forward on the path of change. The dramaturgical axis focuses on - seen from the perspective of 2023 - the relationship between citizens and the oppressive state, social conflicts, as well as the personal choices (and the consequences of those choices) of the people who took part in the protests against the dictatorship.

BY theatre is a theatre project, bringing together playwrights, directors, actors, artists and other theatre people who had to leave Belarus. BY theatre's projects are created in co-productions with Polish partners in their spaces - this form of collaboration reinforces multiculturalism. All projects are based on contemporary Belarusian drama (in Belarusian, with Polish subtitles). The key idea is to create a database of contemporary Belarusian drama and prepare its translations into other languages. BY theatre aims to become a focal point for free Belarusian culture, connecting expats from Belarus and all those interested in Belarusian culture in exile.

This performance will be presented in Belarusian with Polish surtitles.
