With the release of his now-classic album Blank Banshee 0 in 2012, Canadian producer Patrick Driscoll channeled a path forward for the then nascent vaporwave, fusing the hauntological aesthetics of this then-niche phenomenon with trap production and thereby influencing the shape of the lion's share of the popular music of the next decade. Using samples from old computer games and operating systems, Blank Banshee's tracks put aside the conceptualism and ideological underpinnings of earlier vaporwave, opting for a greater level of abstraction and immediate emotiveness; the then-anonymous project's mysterious aura also contributed to its cult status. In the following years, Driscoll expanded his palette to include glossy rubs against club music (Mega, 2016) and New Age-y muzak inspired by music from video game menus (Music for Menus, 2022)…
