Academic painter, professor Boris Jirků (* 10. 04. 1955 in Zlín) deals with painting, drawing, graphics, book illustration, and sculpture. He studied at SUPŠ in Uherské Hradiště and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under professor Arnošt Paderlík.

Most of his works have a figurative character, dynamic perspective, and expressive colors play an important role in paintings and illustrations. His work is a parable of contemporary modern life with an original author’s expression. The picturesqueness, expressiveness, and often even absurdity of the pictorial stories lead to the classification and assigning of Boris Jirků’s work to the school of Czech grotesque.

He took part in creative stays in Brazil, Canada, Andalusia, Ecuador, the Galapagos, French Languedoc, Brittany, and Sicily. He taught figure drawing for many years at the Prague University of Applied Arts, where he was also a rector. He is currently leading figure drawing at the University of Pilsen and doctoral studies at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. He is the founder and organizer of the FIGURAMA project, an international exhibition of drawings by European universities.

He illustrated many important works of world literature, such as M. Bulgakov’s The Master and Marguerite, Maxim Gorky’s Bitter Short Stories, Chronicle of the Announced Death, and G. G. Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. He is the holder of artistic awards, for example he won the Most Beautiful Book of the Year award several times for original book illustrations.

Boris Jirků is one of the most important contemporary authors, he is represented in collections all over the world.
