Carrie Mae Weems: People in Conditions

Tickets

The People in Conditions exhibition at Barbara Thumm Gallery brings together local and global, past and future, individual and collective narratives, all connected through Weems' performative style. Themes include the colonialist history of Western culture, the role of Black artists in that history, and the hegemonic structures of social and institutional representational practices.

The exhibition focuses on the eponymous work People in Conditions, Weems' most recent work, on public view for the first time at Barbara Thumm Gallery. The work builds on Weems' 2021 video installation Cyclorama - Conditions: A Video in 7 Parts, which she produced for the exhibition The Shape of Things at New York's Park Avenue Armory. The blue-tinted photographs show choreographers and performers standing in the rain and snow, including Gabri Christa, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Vinson Fraley. By confronting the models head-on with the viewer, Weems reveals these art and culture makers in their unvarnished essence and beauty, confronting us with the reality of hope and violence coexisting today. At the heart of the work is the question of how we can measure the value of a life.
