About De La Soul

De La Soul is an American hip-hop trio made up of rapper Kelvin Mercer, David J. Jolicœur and Vincent Mason, founded in 1987 in New York City. Together with bands such as A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers De La Soul formed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the group of the Native Tongue Family, a movement that dealt instead of the then usual Gangsta and Ghettolyrics with social issues and on set a friendlier image. It was called No School and / or Next School. The three members have several aliases: Kelvin Mercer has the pseudonyms Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why and Plug One, David Jude Jolicœur Trugoy the Dove, Dave and Plug Two, and Vincent Mason Pasemaster Mase, Maseo and Plug Three. The music of her debut album, produced by Prince Paul Three Feet High and Rising was characterized by samples of jazz (jazz rap), rock and even country, the game with a hippiesken aesthetics and a sometimes quite peculiar humor. For example, the title of the record was a cover from a song by Johnny Cash. The decoupled single *Me, Myself and I * became a hit worldwide.
