The operetta The Pearls of Cleopatra by Julian Brammer and Alfred Grünwald will be performed at the Komische Oper in Berlin from December 2, 2022 to January 6, 2023 in a production by Barrie Kosky.

The Nile is drying up, Roman armies are threatening in the distance and, on top of that, a rebellion in her own ranks is looming: Cleopatra has her hands full and is in a bad mood to boot. But the beautiful head of state only wants a "little Egyptian flirt"! So instead of the Persian prince Beladonis with his "little love flute", she promptly makes the Roman envoy Silvius her compliant lover. Whether international or intimate relations - the most beautiful queen in the world reigns unrestricted over all men.

Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald peppered their libretto for the Viennese Oscar Straus, who was also successful in Berlin, with sharp wit and cheeky double entendres. In the guise of cheerful, frivolous entertainment, with music ranging between cabaret, jazz, late romanticism and a dash of Viennese waltz bliss, The Pearls of Cleopatra is a punchy satire on bourgeois conservatism and a clear-sighted commentary on the already looming political disaster of the 1930s. More than eighty years after its sensational premiere with Berlin theater legend Fritzi Massary in the title role, the work returns to the stage of the Komische Oper Berlin with Dagmar Manzel as Cleopatra. The pyramids of Giza directly on the Spree!
