Wojciech Fangor was born in Warsaw in 1922. During the war he studied privately under Tadeusz Pruszkowski and Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski. In 1946 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he worked as an associate professor between 1953 and 1961. In 1961, he left socialist Poland to return to the country after 38 years and take an active part in the artistic life of his homeland. He lived in Vienna, France, West Berlin, England and the United States. His works can be found in museums, galleries and private collections around the world. Between 1949 and 2015 he had more than fifty solo exhibitions, mainly in the USA and Europe. He was the only Pole to have a solo exhibition at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1970, presenting 37 canvases that were precursors to Western op-art explorations - these paintings have become symbols of this trend. He received many awards, including 2nd prize at the 2nd National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1951) and the Jan Cybis Award for 2014 - the oldest and most prestigious award in the field of fine arts in Poland. He was awarded the Gold Medal "Merited in Culture Gloria Artis" - a Polish medal awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage - and the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Rebirth of Poland - awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland. In 2015 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He died in Warsaw in 2015.

Fangor created in various genres and techniques. To some of them he returned after years. He never identified himself with any artistic group. He went down in art history as a versatile artist, focused on the essence of space - both in the physical and metaphorical context. In the exhibition hall on the second floor of the CCA, painting works will be presented, including Fangor's largest work in terms of surface area, entitled Kucie kos. The exhibition will also include sculptures, posters and mosaic projects that decorated Warsaw's Śródmieście railway station and the second line of the underground. Complementing the image of the artist-drawer will be an extremely interesting graphic project by Fangor - his hand-made mock-up album published in 2007 under the title Fangor. Works on paper in colour. In cooperation with aTAK Gallery and Krzysztof Musiał, we have prepared for the exhibition more than 130 drawings by Fangor.

*The exhibition has been realized courtesy of museums, institutions, galleries and private collectors, and will be accompanied by a review of films about the artist.
