The Musicophilia Festival is a continuation of three previous editions of Toruń's music festival of international status. In 2020 the festival will present concerts of instrumentalists from Poland, Germany and Austria, working in the field of contemporary, improvised and electronic music. Every year the organizers of the festival focus on a different specific theme, which this time is "borderline".
"Borderland is the key word of contemporary humanities, which can be understood broadly, taking into account its geographical, historical, cultural and metaphysical aspects. A borderline is a factor that enriches identity, liberates tolerance, freedom and responsibility and creates cultural dialogues. It is a platform for intercultural communication, understood as a process of crossing the boundaries of one's own culture and tradition, in favor of exploring other cultures and customs, while respecting the common cultural heritage.
The history of Toruń, the city which is the seat of the Musicophilia Festival, is a significant part of the "borderland" issue. In the historically changing area of Toruń, since the 13th century, there has been a continuous ethnic and cultural exchange of people from the monastic state of Prussia, Silesia, Westphalia, Saxony, Thuringia, Czech Republic and Moravia, the Netherlands and Poland.
The term 'borderline' in music, on the other hand, refers to experiments, improvisation, innovation, unconventional juxtaposition, the search for non-traditional techniques of sound extraction or the penetration of different musical worlds. All the invited musicians are experts in exploring instrumental music, acoustic and electronic instruments, whose richness and span of sound is immense. Crossing borders in music is connected with their desire for freedom - personal, political, imagination.
