Festival Muzykofilia returns this year for its sixth edition "Kazimierz Serocki in memoriam".

The Festival Muzykofilia. Edition VI: Kazimierz Serocki in memoriam is a continuation of the five well-received previous editions of this internationally recognised musical event in Toruń. Each year, at the centre of the Festival's narrative appears an important social and artistic issue, touching upon the essence of music. March 2022 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kazimierz Serocki (born on 03.03.1922 in Toruń) – one of the most eminent composers of the 20th century, placed in a row with Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk M. Górecki, and Wojciech Kilar.

Kazimierz Serocki was a versatile musical personality - he co-created the post-war musical avant-garde in the so-called sonorism trend, he composed music to dozens of films, including Krzyżacy and Potop. He was the co-initiator and organiser of the famous Warsaw Autumn Festival, and the recipient of many awards. The issue of sonoristics in new music was crucial for the organisers of Muzykofilia from the very beginning of the festival's existence, which is why the festival holds dear the conviction of Kazimierz Serocki, who believed that sound alone can play the role of the basic element of composition. This year's festival programme - devoted to the outstanding composer - will feature premiere concerts and performances of his compositions by excellent instrumentalists. The international line-up of invited artists will present original and unorthodox approaches to the composer's music, reinterpretations and works inspired by Serocki's oeuvre.

On Friday, you will hear improvisations around K. Serocki's compositions performed by Andrzej Karalow and in the finale by Jacek Buhl and Rafał Iwański. That day, the programme also includes the Half Cloud, Half Plain project created since 2005 by Chris Heenan playing the contrabass clarinet and saxophones and Michael Vorfeld on percussion and string instruments of his own design. On 21 May, musical performances will continue in the Great Hall by students of the K. Szymanowski Music School Complex in Toruń under the artistic supervision of Magdalena Cynk-Mikołajewska. Afterwards, the composition entitled *Jazz For Mr Ives, Jazz for Mr Serocki * will be performed by the Bydgoszcz Composer Collective composed of Rafał Gorzycki – percussion, piano; Mikołaj Sarad - alto and soprano saxophone, piano; Bartłomiej Chmara - electronics; Mia Zabelka (Austria) - violin and Zahra Mani (Pakistan/UK) - electronics. The festival will be crowned with lectures in the Small Hall. The first of these will be Sound – Form – Experiment. On avant-garde music of Kazimierz Serocki by Polish musicologist Iwona Lindstedt, PhD. The second lecture, hosted by Magdalena Cynk-Mikołajewska, will serve as an introduction to a concert by students of the K. Szymanowski Music School Complex in Toruń. An additional event during the Festival will be a Small Music Fair, which will be held in the Mirror Room on 20-21 May, from 6 p.m.
