On December 16 and 17, 2022, the theatre performance FREMD will take place at the Fabriktheater in Moabit.

The stranger is only a stranger in the stranger. Because every foreigner who feels foreign is a foreigner, until he no longer feels foreign, then he is no longer a foreigner. Very true! – But if a stranger has been a stranger for a long time, will he always remain a stranger? In the project Fremd (Stranger), four artists develop a play based on poems by the poet Mascha Kaléko in combination with Ukrainian folk tunes, which deals with the theme of strangers on the basis of current events in Ukraine. On stage are the Ukrainian Solomia Lukyanets with vocals, Sophia Stürmer with violin and vocals and the Ukrainian cellist Denys Karachevtsev, who has been living in Berlin for a few weeks and until recently played the cello in devastated Kharkiv.

Where there is music, there is still life. Under this motto, he played Bach concertos on the cello in the streets between the bombed-out buildings of his home city. The performance deals musically and scenically with these and other impressions and thoughts on the subject of being a foreigner. Through the poems of the Jewish lyricist Mascha Kaléko, who had to flee from Berlin to New York during the Second World War, the theme is opened up to an omnipresent condition. The lightness of her poems makes it possible to see the foreign as something everyday and strange at the same time. Elements of her own accounts of her experiences, Ukrainian folk songs, and the poems, all of which deal with the theme of home and homelessness, are combined.
