Venue description

Baszta Gallery is a place on the map of contemporary art in Krakow, operating since 2018. The gallery's atypical location and shape are intended to become a starting point for the creation of unique site-specific installations. Most galleries in Krakow operate under the white cube formula, which assumes complete transparency of the exhibition space in favour of better exposure of the work. "Baszta" aims to reverse this relationship - the difficult space can influence the shape and subject matter of the work in an interesting way. Between May and October 2018, six artistic events were organised in an unusual architectural space - the ruins of a 16th-century tower. The artists presented exhibitions, performances and site-specific installations, which met with an excellent reception for this type of contemporary art presented outside the very centre of Krakow.

The gallery is curated by Artur Wabik, a lecturer at Krakow's Academy of Fine Arts, visual artist, publicist and pop culture researcher. Associated with the graffiti movement and later with street art, he is the author of murals and installations in public space. Thanks to this cooperation, the unusual exhibition space also becomes a challenge for students of the Academy of Fine Arts and stimulates artistic exploration and innovative activities.
