The Globe Berlin is a theatre for Shakespeare enthusiasts, rebuilt from parts of the former Schwäbisch Hall Globe Theatre in Sömmeringstraße in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Not only Shakespeare is performed, though. The selection of authors is based on three categories: 1. modern productions of Shakespeare's works and other classics, 2. material developments by German-language playwrights as "Berlin discoveries" and 3. performances of plays for children and young people by selected authors with the specific aim of developing a younger, multilingual audience.
Christian Leonard, founder and former director of the Shakespeare Company Berlin, acquired the building in 2016 and realised his vision of a Globe Theatre for Berlin with its own Globe Ensemble. Funded by the Neustart Kultur programme, he has created Corona-appropriate conditions for rehearsals, visitor services and catering. The Schmetterling, a multifunctional lounge for the artists, was built directly next to the open-air stage according to the designs of the architects' collective raumlaborberlin.
