The main theme of Imperial is the waltz. Following Masakra, which explored representations of Latin American dances, Sakowicz focuses on dances from the realm of those standard, utilitarian, peasant and ballroom at the same time. His exploration of the waltz (and its non-obvious history) also allows him to ask about the class identity of choreography: how the takeover of dance by a particular social class can affect the politicality of moving bodies and be an element of cultural advancement. And can dance even be socially just?
Pawel Sakowicz is a choreographer and dancer. He holds a degree in political science from the University of Warsaw and an MA in performance and choreography from London Contemporary Dance School. He has worked with Ramona Nagabczyńska, Marta Ziółek, Iza Szostak, Alex Baczynski-Jenkins, Rebecca Lazier, Isabelle Schad, Peter Pleyer, Joanna Leśnierowska, Magda Szpecht, Łukasz Twarkowski, Michał Borczuch and Anna Smolar.
