About Leila Bordreuil

Leila Bordreuil is a French composer, improviser and cellist currently based in Brooklyn. In her music, she uses amplification, spatiality, and various unorthodox techniques to create disorienting swirls of improvised sound in which small gestures are drastically magnified. However, her compositions can be both melancholic and uplifting, as if you are being carried away by a warm polyphonic ocean of sound. This puts her in a special place, somewhere between the cello stars as Okkyung Lee and Arthur Russell. In contrast, Bordreuil focuses more explicitly on the urban environment, the everyday sounds, the continuous noise of the New York streets or the rumbling, howling and whistling of the nearby subway. Her album Not An Elegy (2021, Boomkat), is a duet with a particular subway line, recorded at the Ralph Avenue station. Bordreuil’s sound based on unconventional textures and its relationship to architecture is further developed in special collaborations with Marina Rosenfeld, Eli Keszler, Peter Evans, the Senyawa duo, Lee Ranaldo, Chris Corsano and Lea Bertucci.
