We usually read the story in multiple ways. Contexts, facts, their analysis, are burdened with a subjective baggage of experiences, beliefs, sympathy and antipathy. When stereotypes come to the fore and xenophobic blindness takes precedence over the truth, it is difficult to reach a consensus. But when dialogue wins, truth wins.
List from Warsaw, a musical written by an excellent trumpeter, jazzman and composer – Gary Guthman and playwright Doman Nowakowski, moves through the whole space of what is common and different for Poles and Jews. As its creators say, in every argument, in every dispute, there are at least two opposing points of view, and the truth often lies more or less “in the middle” of the views of the opposite side. There are, therefore, situations in which all the arguments are fundamentally right and at the same time. Which right to choose in such a situation? Which truth is closer to the objective truth? And does such truth exist at all? Musical List from Warsaw is the result of over a year’s work of an American Jew and a Polish Catholic. Through words and music they discover forgotten truths and lie down stereotypes that have grown over the years. The authors look for what they have in common, passing over the barriers, and the surprising development of the action makes the viewer never sure what will happen next.
