The man behind this mysterious name is Eric Estornel (Maceo Plex) with his early project dedicated to electronic music and IDM. The name comes from the wave of Cuban refugees who came to Miami in 1980. The Cubans living in Miami called the newcomers “Marieitos”, and due to bad behaviour at school, it also sort of stuck to young Eric. The alias evolved into an outright project, resulting in a number of publications inspired by the sound of major labels, such as Warp, Rephlex and R&S. In 2006, Eric dropped the project in favour of other aliases and started taking over international stages as Maceo Plex. Mariel Ito returned in 2018 when the legendary R&S label released the artist’s previously unpublished records.
