"I composed a monstrous drama of Pure Form entitled 'The Mother' in the carriage, on the way to Jaworskis near Warsaw. Provided I succeed, it will be downright marvellous," the Polish modernist classic Witkacy wrote in a letter to his wife on 28 November 1924. Three weeks later, the play was ready, although it had to wait another forty years for its premiere, until Jerzy Jarocki staged it at the Stary in Kraków.

A parody of the naturalistic theatre of Strindberg, Ibsen and Przybyszewski? An autobiographical portrait of a versatile artist dependent on his mother for support? A philosophical treatise hidden under the guise of a morality play or perhaps a narcotic vision of a complex megalomaniac? Pure Form – or pure blasphemy? Mother is a story about people condemned to proximity. About a closeness that metastasizes and grows into its opposite. About bonds that bind. A universal story about the family. Because family is what initially sets things in motion and what ultimately devours.
