Na zábradlí Theatre has always been strongly respected institution in the Czech theatre context. From the 2013/2014 it has a new artistic direction. The team consists of the director Petr Štědroň, artistic director Dora Viceníková and stage director Jan Mikulášek. Realization of the new team’s artistic concept strengthens the position of this institution in the Czech theatre network. This statement has been proved during the Critic Awards 2014. Theatre on the Balustrade has won in all those categories and has been chosen as the Theatre of the Year. Auditorium of Theatre on the Balustrade was opened for the first time on the 9th December 1958. The artistic team members Helena Phillipová, Vladimír Vodička, Jiří Suchý and Ivan Vyskočil have presented the play „Kdyby tisíc klarinetů“ (Thousands Clarinets) for the first time on that date. The play has been adapted as a movie screenplay six years later. The drama performances were supplied with a pantomime of Ladislav Fialka, internationally known non-verbal artist. In the 60’s Theatre on the Balustrade was developing the shape of Czech absurd drama. Director Jan Grosmann and playwright Václav Havel (president of Czechoslovakia between the years 1989 – 1992 and president of the Czech Republic in 1993 – 2003) were working here. The theatre was commonly known abroad in these times, despite that Grossman and Havel had to leave the place due to the communist totalitarian regime persecutions. In the 70’s there was a haven for the „Czech new wave“ film directors, whose films were forbidden to be presented in public for the same reason. In the 1993 Doubravka Svobodová became the new director of the Theatre on the Balustrade. During the work of a new artistic director Petr Lébl the theatre was granted with a few Alfréd Radok Awards and in the 1994 and 1997 it was chosen as the Theatre of the Year. Another important director and member of the artistic team was Jiří Pokorný, who directed f. e. performances Terasa (Terrace), Pan Kolpert (Mr. Kolpert), Gazdina roba (Eva) or Platonov je darebák! (Platonov is a rogue!) – the performance had 111 repeatings and was nearly nine years on the repertoir. The guest directors who were or still are working with the Theatre on the Balustrade are Jan Antonín Pitínský, Jan Nebeský, David Czesany, Juraj Nvota, Jiří Havelka, Rastislav Ballek, Jan Frič and many others.
