Venue description

Nitra Castle, situated on a cliff, has always been of strategic importance, as it was a natural fortress above the meander of the Nitra River. Already in the 13th century, the castle was so perfectly fortified that it withstood the attack of the Tatars. The oldest preserved building is the Romanesque church of St. Emerama. The dominant feature of the castle complex is the cathedral, the bishop's palace and the massive fortifications with the rising bastions. The individual buildings were rebuilt several times, the current appearance of the castle is basically from the end of the 17th century, when the castle was fortified after the anti-Turkish battles. Due to its historical and architectural values, the castle complex in Nitra is one of the basic documents in the history of Slovakia. Today, the castle houses the Bishop's Office or the Diocesan Museum.
