The protagonist of the true story-based psychological thriller Nitram is Martin Bryant, who in April 1996 shot dead 35 tourists relaxing at a holiday resort in Tasmania. In telling the story of the biggest massacre in Australia's history, the director places the violence off-screen. Instead, he follows with detective passion the circumstances that led a confused and mentally unstable man to the day he was legally sold a gun.

The seasoned anxiety that pervades the film is due in no small part to Caleb Landry Jones, who won the Best Actor award at Cannes for his performance as Bryant. The American indie darling, known for work in films by Jim Jarmusch, Jordan Peele and the Safdie brothers, has created a complex, elusive character in Nitram. In Australia, where the film's revisiting of a national trauma has stirred up plenty of emotion, the character is still controversial. Nothing good comes from silence, the director said in an interview, but memories, even the dark ones, are intensely powerful.
