The opening of Teresa Tyszkiewicz's exhibition at the Profile Foundation as part of this year's WGW.
Aseret is an anagram of the artist's name and the title of a series of her large-format, vibrant canvases from the 1980s. It is this decade that becomes the subject of the exhibition, providing a unique insight into the artistic output of Teresa Tyszkiewicz (1953-2020). Although she had been revolving around the Polish neo-avant-garde since the 1970s, she quickly rejected intellectual conceptualism in favour of a sensual, bodily experience of the world. In her emotional and intuitive art, she explores unconventional materials, genres and narratives in order to move the viewer's experience from visual perception to a sensual experience of the materiality of art. In her paintings, she has drawn on a variety of substances from grain and wood to pins, fabric and wire. She not only paints her paintings, but also stabs, welds and chops them with an axe, giving them a sharp and fleshy quality. The exhibition is accompanied by screenings of the artist's films from the 1980s and the promotion of a comprehensive publication presenting Teresa Tyszkiewicz's work over 50 years.
