Formed in the late 1980s, the San Francisco fourpiece Oxbow consists of Dan Adams (electronics, bass), Greg Davis (drums), Eugene S. Robinson (vocals) and Niko Wenner (guitar, piano). The influential group defined a certain niche in 90s noise rock, incorporating influences from blues, contemporary classical and European free jazz, without shying away from lyrical and sonic aggression that brought them comparisons to Neurosis and The Birthday Party. They released four albums in the 1990s, including two produced by Steve Albini, which became canonical positions of experimental rock; they have remained prolific since, releasing collaborations with Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))) and the legendary Peter Brötzmann, among others.
