Although commedia dell'arte is an out-of-date play, it is very much 'of the moment'. Masks, characteristic step and the artistry of actors are able to tell us more about our nature than many realistic plays. The town receives a guest, or rather two guests - the eponymous master and servant, Capitano and Brighella. The first one, a boastful soldier, aims at women's hearts. The second, a greedy thief, wants purses. Their arrival becomes a detonator of quarrels, which have been gathering "under the skin" in the small community for a long time. The inborn skittishness of the parents, the fiery temper of the wife of the gruff Dottore and the unshakeable feeling between Viola and Leander add speed to the comedy spiral.
