In Michael Powell’s film Peeping Tom, a recording device known as the camera becomes a mortal instrument in the hands of the protagonist. Later, when his camera recordings are screened, the homicidal cameraman uses them as a means to satisfy his sick lust. Peeping Tom, a film depicting at the time a very brave theme, was shot at nearly the same time as Psycho (1960). Yet unlike Psycho, Peeping Tom didn’t do very well in the movie theatres and also scandalized many film reviewers. At least, such was the situation at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. Over the years, all the vicious attacks of moralists and censors gradually gave in to respect and even admiration. Nowadays, Peeping Tom is considered one of the best British films made to this day and will always be seen as the most celebrated piece in the filmography of Otto Heller – the most famous cameraman of the Czech classical era.
