Venue description

The small backyard theater Ratibor has now been around for 42 years. The roots of the Kreuzberg theater go back to the 1970s.

The history of the theater and its makers also represents a piece of Berlin's history: shaped by the insular character of West Berlin in the highly politicized 1970s to the Kreuzberg end-time mood in the 1980s, via the fall of the Wall, the post-reunification period and on to the reality of a pulsating metropolis that is just reinventing itself - all this is also reflected in the history of this theater.

The founding of the Ratibor Theater coincides with a period marked by a politicization of the street and the stage, as well as a curiosity for new and different forms of theatrical expression beyond classical director's theater. Inspired by foreign avant-garde theater such as New York's Living Theatre or the Polish theater theorist and practitioner Jerzy Grotowski, an initially quite large group of diverse people joined forces. One could also call this first phase an experimental laboratory. From street theater, experimental theater, agitprop, dance, performance and music, a free theater collective emerged in 1977 - the Ratibor Theater.

The name goes back to Ratiborstraße in Kreuzberg, where they had their first rehearsal floor, which was also used for performances and workshops. In 1980, in search of a new space, the ideal location was found in the core housing in Cuvrystraße, which is still in use today.

Until today, the Ratibor Theater convinces with impressive Impro Theater pieces,
