In the spring of 1986, a symbol of veneration—a silver-carved statue of Saint Adalbert from a baroque reliquary—was stolen from Gniezno Cathedral. A militia lieutenant, played by Mateusz Kościukiewicz, enlists the cooperation of the cathedral's host priests. Both parties seek to recover the sculpture, but cooperation is difficult, as church and state relations have never been so tense. The theft took place less than two years after the death of priest Jerzy Popiełuszko.
