The Slovak Olympic and Sports Museum was established on 24th October, 1985 by the founding deed of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Union of Physical Education as a special purpose facility of the Slovak Central Committee of Czechoslovak Union of Physical Education without the legal subjectivity called – Museum of Physical Culture in Slovakia. The first collection items were registered in Museum of Physical Culture in 1987.
From 1st January 2015, the museum became the organizational unit of the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee. In the framework of its valid statute and other designated missions, Slovak Olympic and Sports Museum systematically performs, in particular, the acquisition of collection items, their professional administration, registration, protection, use and access in the form of permanent expositions, temporary exhibitions, publication and editorial activities, cultural-educational activities, scientific and research activities in the field of Olympic Movement and the history of sports in Slovakia. A sought-after part of the museum by the professional and lay public is the library and photo archive.
