Pointiert, timeless, crazy, enchanting, true to life - the Friedrich Hollaender-Revue. With the piece Süß und Doof – und ohne Portemonnaie (Cute and goofy – and without a wallet), Dirk Rave on accordion, Chanson-Nette and Henry Nandzik reinterpret Hollaender's work.

Friedrich Hollaender (1896-1976) is considered the genius of the century of popular and intelligent chanson. He was a Berlin jack-of-all-trades who wrote the wonderful melodies to go with the whimsical wordplay of his lyrics and worked closely with many stars of the twenties, but also of the post-war period – from Kurt Tucholsky and Marlene Dietrich to Billy Wilder and Billie Holiday.

In this piece, presented at Ballhaus Wedding, Dirk Rave, Chanson-Nette and Henry Nandzik take their audience into Hollaender's world in a beautifully quirky way. They present his great life's work as it is not yet known – partly polyphonic in the style of the Comedian Harmonists, with new musical arrangements by Dirk Rave to the accordion. Not Gaga, no, a bit of Dada – with lesser known chansons about child prodigies, princesses, night ghosts or hysterical goats. But, of course, also with evergreens like Marlene's Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt (I am set on love from head to toe).

Imaginatively and sensitively, Friedrich Hollaender recorded the quiet and loud sounds of his time. He created classics that are still politically topical today. With his art he fought against hatred and violence. The National Socialists persecuted him because of his political views and because he was Jewish. In 1933, he fled to Hollywood via Paris, and returned to Germany in 1955. The "great little Friedrich," as Charlie Chaplin affectionately called him, made cabaret great as a special genre. With Süß und Doof – und ohne Portemonnaie (Cute and goofy – and without a wallet) and this irresistible trio, Friedrich Hollaender's art comes highly alive again.
