Venue description

The Museum in Nieborów and Arkadia was established in 1945. It consists of the Radziwill Palace together with the garden in Nieborów and the Romantic Garden of Helena Radziwiłł in Arkadia. Until the end of January 1945, the palace in Nieborów and the garden in Arkadia were located within the territory of the Nieborów-Mysłakowo estate of Ordynat Ołycki Janusz Prince Radziwiłł. The entire Radziwiłł family was deported by the NKVD to the Soviet Union in February 1945 and imprisoned in the Krasnogorsk camp. The then director of the National Museum in Warsaw, Stanisław Lorentz, in accordance with an earlier agreement with Radziwiłł, took care of the unique Nieborów palace and its collections, as well as the historic garden in Arkadia, immediately incorporating them into the Warsaw National Museum as its branch. This saved the palace and its collections from devastation and dispersal during the worst period of orthodox Stalinism.

The palace now houses a museum of the interiors of the palace residence from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, based on the surviving furnishings of the palace and its collections (sculpture, paintings, graphics, furniture, bronzes, porcelain and glass, silver, clocks, textiles, library collections), supplemented by objects of art and artistic craftsmanship from the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. The palace and the regular (French) garden in Nieborów and the English (sentimental-romantic) garden in Arkadia, after renovation and tidying up, have been opened to the public as stylish palace-garden residences. The Nieborów and Arkadia Museum was awarded the Gold Medal of the Minister of Culture and the Arts in 1987 for the conservation and care of the Nieborów and Arkadia palace-garden complex, and in June 1994 the European Prize for the Protection of Monuments (Europa-Preis für Denkmalphlege) from the FVS foundation in Hamburg.
