An empty theater hall, end of performance. An audience member who has forgotten her backpack meets the director of the evening on stage and takes the opportunity to vent her anger. She is an author and equally horrified by the performance and the director's complacency. What follows is a passionate argument about theater, the inextricable entanglement of art and commerce, gender stereotypes and power structures in a male-dominated world. At the end, the director offers the author to write a play for him.

What makes a good evening in the theater? Who or what decides what is played? How do economic considerations influence artistic decisions? Is power - whether in the workplace, in the arts, or in relationships - masculine? Can a system be changed from within? In her latest play, British author Ella Hickson combines punchy entertainment with unsparing social analysis. Completely in the tradition of "well-made play" and yet still an experiment in form, Hickson uses her own profession to pose major social questions in "The Writer" and arrives at answers that are uncomfortable for all of us.

*The Writer", directed by Fritzi Wartenberg, a graduate in directing from the Max Reinhardt Seminar, is the second production in the framework of the young talent program WORX.
