Buddy is nine years old and lives in Belfast. He loves the cinema and playing with the neighbourhood children. In the afternoons he spends time with his grandparents, who give him advice on how to win the interest of a beautiful classmate. Suddenly, the boy's carefree childhood is interrupted by the tragic events of the civil war over Northern Ireland being part of Great Britain. Buddy tries to understand why people, who have lived together for generations, are becoming opposites from one day to the next, and why religious affiliation is becoming so important. To make matters worse, his parents are increasingly talking about moving to England or far away overseas. Buddy tries to find the courage needed to survive these anxieties in his mother's inner strength, his father's positive attitude and his grandparents' life lessons.
