Franz Walter has just completed his doctorate at Humbolt University in East Berlin in the second half of the 1970s. The university authorities offer him a job and a professorship, as well as a flat commensurate with his future position, the standard of which far exceeds that of the average citizen. The young scientist proudly invites his fiancée to live with him. This wonderful perspective of a new life and career is disturbed only by one small detail. In exchange for the benefits received, the state expects a year's cooperation with the Ministry of Public Security, or STASI. For a loyal citizen like Franz Walter, this is not a major problem and he signs the cooperation agreement almost in passing. His first task is to get a football player from Hamburg, who has managed to escape to the West, to return to the GDR. The methods used by his colleagues are familiar even today: provocation, false accusations, interference in private life. When the life of the footballer's wife is at stake, Walter decides to withdraw.
