About Jiří Slavík

Jiří Slavík (born 1986 in Havířov) has the double bass as his main instrument. When he moved to Rome with his family at the age of 14, he attended Massimo Giorgi’s double bass class at the Santa Cecilia Conservatoire. Then, thanks to his astonishing talent and exceptional academic achievements, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied classical double bass and jazz composition. In reality, however, Jiří can play virtuosically anything. Not only on string instruments, including the violin, but also on wind instruments and keyboards. His knowledge of the technique of each instrument enables him to compose brilliantly for a wide variety of ensembles, in genres ranging from contemporary "classical" music to jazz or stage music to echoes of Moravian folklore. This year, then, the Prague-based Slavik is more of a world citizen. In addition to Italy and the UK, he has worked for many years in France. Perhaps this is where the diversity and openness of Slavík's musical thinking comes from.
