UNICEF – Foto des Jahres

UNICEF Germany awards the international competition UNICEF Photo of the Year annually for pictures and reports by professional photojournalists that document the personalities and living conditions of children. The exhibition of the photo award can be visited this year in the Willy Brandt House from January 19 to February 26, 2023.

The pictures show the living conditions of children and young people in the most difficult life situations: in war, in material or mental distress. But also moments of confidence and hope as well as facets of different everyday worlds are depicted. The unifying element this year is the children's need to educate themselves even under the most adverse circumstances.

As in previous years, the award was decided by an independent jury. It selected reports and documentaries that stand out for their particular aesthetic and journalistic quality, as well as for their care, empathy and respect for children.

This year's UNICEF Photo of the Year symbolizes the resilience of children. It shows what unites children all over the world despite the most difficult circumstances: their curiosity and their quest for education. The winning images capture such moments in the Ethiopian civil war, Ukraine and Afghanistan.
