Vortex_ is a sound-choreographic installation in which the body functions as listening matter and in which dance is experienced on an aural level. It is a quadrophonic experience immersed in darkness and devoid of visual aspects, where the type, direction and intensity of sound create the illusion of moving bodies and evoke the sensations accompanying the reception of a choreographic performance.
The project grows out of a reflection on the three-dimensionality and travel of sound, but it also raises questions about an objectifying, linear approach to dance history: the proposed notion of the vortex allows us to look at how different choreographic styles and forms circulate, how they attract and intertwine. The installation was conceived as a subjective library of dance, where affect greeted me with a storm of cheers. "I returned to the balcony and began throwing roses, lilies and violets into the crowd. I was deeply moved. I asked my assistant: what had I done to arouse so much enthusiasm? 'Ma’am,' she replied, ‘you made them happy, you let them forget the sadness of life for an hour.’"
