The exhibition Whose Expression? The Brücke Artists and Colonialism shows works from a time when the German Empire was one of the largest colonial powers in Europe.

The theme is the tension between inspiration and appropriation in which Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff operated. Thus they made use of stylistic elements of the arts and cultures from Africa, Oceania, or India as inspiration for their art, without reflecting on their contexts of origin, colonial power relations, and their racist worldview.

The lives of the unknown sitters will be highlighted in the exhibition, as well as the biographies of the works from colonial contexts.
