The play Kunst by Yasmin Reza in the Berliner Ensemble is about three friends who quarrel because of an expensively purchased painting with white stripes on a white background.
The character Serge, who buys the painting, stiffens in his view and cannot take a joke in relation to it. It is not the purchase of the painting that is the drama of art, says Reza, but that one can no longer laugh with it.
The work of art itself is a catalyst through which Yasmina Reza portrays the three men, their feelings and sensitivities in a psychologically drawn manner.
