A tragic story of a rural family of musicians. The film is set in Bukovina, at the junction of the Ukrainian, Romanian and Polish borders, and spans the period from 1939 to the late 1940s. The Zwonar family lives in extreme poverty. They do not have enough land to live on, so they smuggle goods to survive. When they get a chance, the Zwonar sons make a living by playing music at village festivals. However, all this is not enough and the father puts his sons up for sale. They find themselves in the service of rich landlords. In 1949, when the Soviet army enters Bukovina, the brothers' paths diverge for good: two of them join the Red Army, the third will fight for independent Ukraine. The war spares only one of them, who starts working as a village doctor.
