About PKF – Prague Philharmonia

PKF – Prague Philharmonia was founded in 1994 on the initiative of conductor Jiří Bělohlávek under the original name of the Prague Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra as a chamber ensemble composed of young music school graduates playing with real passion and commitment. After 1996, it gradually joined the circle of leading orchestras in the Czech Republic and established a reputation abroad. The basic composition of the PKF – Prague Philharmonia is based on the type of orchestra of the Viennese Classical period, whose compositions form the basic pillar of the repertoire. In addition to the top works of this epoch and the Romantic era, it is supplemented by a special series of concerts of modern and contemporary music, which is still unique in the offer of Czech orchestras.

In the field of education, PKF – Prague Philharmonia is dedicated not only to young talented musicians, but also to children. It was the first orchestra in the Czech Republic to organize special concerts for children, which are popular not only among children but also among adult listeners. Thanks to their concept, their programme does not act as an educational one, but on the contrary introduces children to classical music in a very entertaining way. The children’s programme is complemented by the children's club Notička, which seeks to enrich their aesthetic sensibilities and expand the range of leisure activities.

The orchestra has been led by a number of renowned chief conductors since its foundation – Kaspar Zehnder took over in 2005 after Jiří Bělohlávek, then Jakub Hrůša in 2008 and the French conductor Emmanuel Villaume at the beginning of the 2015/2016 season.

PKF performs regularly with world-famous conductors and soloists and has recorded more than 90 CDs for prestigious international and domestic music labels. The orchestra also participates in international concert tours in Asia (Japan, Taiwan) and Europe (Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, etc.) and almost every year performs at festivals such as the Prague Spring Festival, Smetana's Litomyšl, Český Krumlov Festival, Lednice-Valtice Music Festival and the St. Wenceslas Music Festival. International festivals include the Brucknerfest in Linz, Bratislava Music Festival, Les Musicales de Colmar and the Murten Classics Festival.
