The Picture Gallery at Prague Castle is the oldest collection of paintings remaining in our lands. Their interesting destinies reflect the unsettling events from the 16th century until the present day leaving indelible marks across Central Europe: the renowned gallery from Emperor Rudolf II being made into a war prize, the new Habsburg collection either being removed from the Prague Castle premises or sold off elsewhere and the highly-valued canvasses serving merely as common decorations. The most valuable pieces from the protected historical set, together with Czech Baroque and 19th century paintings from new purchases, only started attracting much deserved attention in the middle of the twentieth century. Upon completing demanding rebuilding and modification work, the halls of the Picture Gallery were opened to the public in 1997.

The prominent collection of European paintings is constantly being enhanced by adding the latest acquisitions and visitors are able to view the selected works of court artists, old masters from the German and Dutch Renaissance, Italian Renaissance, Mannerism as well as Central European artists and Dutch Baroque painters. The present permanent exhibition at the Picture Gallery in Prague Castle is testimony to the traditional collectors and the patronage activity of rulers and presidents with whose tastes, the visitor today is able to become more closely acquainted.

The exhibition is located on the 2nd floor inside Prague Castle and is open daily (i.e. including Monday).
