Popis miesta

The Brücke Museum is the only museum in the world devoted exclusively to works by members of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. This unique collection of paintings, drawings, aquarelles and print graphics by Brücke members, including Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde and Otto Mueller, showcases Germany's first major contribution to the international avant-garde. Complemented by sculptures, documents and other artistic works, the collection enables a complete overview of the group's expressionistic oeuvre.

The life and work of individual group members is examined from different perspectives in a number of changing exhibitions. The presentation of the historical and artistic environment of Die Brücke is complemented by additional exhibitions covering other expressionistic and avant-garde artists of the early 20th century.

The museum was founded in 1967 on the initiative of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Housed in a bungalow designed by Werner Düttmann, the museum blends perfectly into the surrounding villa district in Grunewald.
