Popis miesta

Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) was a sculptor and graphic artist who originated from Königsberg and lived and worked in Berlin for more than 50 years. She took many motifs and much inspiration for her work from her immediate environment, a working-class district in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood. The Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin is a private institution devoted to the artist and her work: it has been housed since 1986 in a late-Classicist city villa on Fasanenstraße in the district of Charlottenburg. The museum emerged out of the collection of gallery owner Hans Pels-Leusden.

The Käthe Kollwitz Museum currently has over 200 drawings and printed graphics as well as 15 original posters and an equal number of sculptures. At the heart of the collection are the self-portraits created between 1888/89 and 1938, the "War" woodcut cycle from 1922/23, her work on the theme of death and the memorial for Karl Liebknecht from 1919/20.

A new permanent exhibition opened in November 2014. Special exhibitions also usually take place twice a year.
