The American hip-hop group Arrested Development was formed in 1988. It was different from the rest of the scene. Its two founders – MC Speech and Headliner – met at the Art Institute in Atlanta, where they studied and organized various public speaking events. A community has formed around them that has rejected the influence of gangsta rap on the lives of young people. Instead of a culture of consumption, spending money, drugs and violence, it prioritized education and values to ensure a decent life for young people. This resulted in their name Arrested Development, which was supposed to refer to the fact that hip-hop and rap are not just the domain of dangerous streets. In 2020 and 2021 they released the albums Don't Fight Your Demons and For the FKN Lov.
Arrested Development became the first ever hip-hop artist to receive the “best new artist” Grammy, (a distinction it still maintains today in that category). In addition, the group also received a Grammy award for “best rap single” for their anthemic prayer-like hit song, Tennessee. The song has gone on to be named as one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in the top 100 Greatest Songs of the 90’s by VH1.
