SO36

SO36, located at Oranienstraße in Berlin-Kreuzberg, is for sure one of the most history-charged clubs in Berlin and has its roots in the punk- and squatting time. In the late 70s and early 80s, SO36 was the centre of the German punk- and new wave scene and in the 90s the word „queer“ established in German language thanks to the queer parties at SO36.

The name itself is the former abbreviation for the postal delivery district of Kreuzberg, and therefore „Esso“ (the club’s nickname) wants to be an active part of Berlin’s and Kreuzberg’s music scene.

Nowadays, there are concerts and parties with all styles of music taking place, from punk and techno to hiphop, as well as cultural events (such as flea markets, film screenings or dancing lessons). The list of artists that have played at SO36 is long: Some examples are Rancid, The Offspring, U.S. Bombs or Social Distortion.

The club understands itself as a creative, alternative, open minded and LGBTQ friendly venue.

In 2009, SO36 won the Live Entertainment Award as the best club.
